So, I decided when got rained out 10 days ago, that we were going to go back out to Woodburn Oregon for the BATTLE OF THE IMPORTS. I wasn't going to be denied my final chance of the year to put the white car in the 9's. And also finally get a good time with the red car on a full 1/4 mile track was hoping to dip in the 10's. I've had a lot of transmission "issues" with that car. We'll get it eventually. I'd like to see that thing finally dip a 6 in Malta. I've seen cars with less power run 6.8 in the 1/8th in front wheel drive.
I really wanted that 9 with the white car before we put it away for the year. So we went back 10 days later out to Oregon for the make up race. Even a 9.999 would have been just fine.
White car we tuned at 15psi to 630whp on the dyno. and that was what I was going to start with on fresh slicks. we got there and decided "screw it", let's put some REAL tune it and see what it will do. so we upped the boost to put us in 750whp range for the first passes. That's a the known area for transmission death, so that's where we kind of stopped, to see how it would react.
The red car has a new head and a different tune and is putting out a bit more power and we re-did the transmission and clutch. I roll up, get in the water box. The guy gives me the high sign, I preload and let out the pedal.... car lurches to a stop and engine dies. Clutch failed (and whatever else went with it). 4200 mile trip, didn't even rotate a tire with the car... *insert emptyness in the pit of my stomach*
White car, entered in "Pro-Import". I roll up with the big tune. I've been running the car at 550-575whp at Battle before and in the 400-450whp range in Malta. To say the car felt "different" with 750+whp would be an understatement. At these events, the front wheel drive cars lay down a LOT more rubber on the top, and we have a better shot of putting up a number. I REALLY BAD, want to see how it hooks now on all the cement in Malta. Red car was still "iffy" out of the hole there, but not as bad as it could have been.
I come up to the line and get a bye run in the left lane. Sounds great... but In other words... I'm the first guy they put in the left lane after an oil down on the big end... LOVELY.. So I have to run this thing on an un-proven lane after an oil down... I'm not happy.
I've got to put some real weatherstripping on the doors of the white car, it fills with smoke WAY to fast during a burnout.
It comes out of the hole and I blow the tires off, stab second, more of the same. I miss 3rd gear so bad, that it's like 2-3 stabs at it. Showed as nearly .75 seconds of fooling around on the data log, I fell off boost completely and had to re-spool. Meanwhile 3rd gear is starting to catch and I'm heading toward the wall, it hooks and now I'm heading toward the center line. All over the track. I go out the top and while braking, I'm frequently locking and smoking the rear tires. and the car is getting sideways. I should have tossed the chute.
I get back and James, the tuner from Speedfactory says, "did you shift RIGHT when the shift light came on?" I said, "Dude, the light was on the whole pass, it never went off, slipping and sliding the tires the whole time ."
It was a throw away run. The best it ran previously, with excellent traction, fast shifts, staying on boost, was 10.02@146 with a 1.56 sixty foot.
This run was a mess, start to finish, went 10.2@150 with a 1.8 sixty foot, missing gears, falling off boost etc. It's gonna blow my mind when I get to make a decent pass with it with traction and stay on power. the 1/8th showed 6.8@112.8 on that run, loose and missing gears. Not a bad start
2nd pass. We take some timing out of first gear to see if it will hook better. knock the tires down to 6.50psi from 7.50psi. I blow the transmission on the 1-2 shift. And that ends the weekend.
Did I mention how bummed out I am?
Stock Honda transmissions are kind of noted to be "Sketchy" at 700-750whp. So that's why we stopped the tune about there. in the last 7 runs, I've cracked a diff, a housing, blown a gear set, and broken the best axles you can buy. I'm NOT looking forward to putting a Liberty transmission in the car and it doesn't look like there is any way around it.
I saw several front wheel drive cars slips with numbers in the 5's in the 1/8th @ 130-135. Amazing. and I watched several different front wheel drive cars run high 8's without a wheelie bar. "....8's...." that's unbelievable to me out of 105-120 cubic inches of motor.
Speedfactory boys pushed a headgasket and that was it for them in the outlaw class. Their ALL MOTOR car ran a10.58@130 and is .16 off of a national record. Was fun to be standing on the line to watch that pass. that car is basically my Red hatchback, but no turbo. ALL MOTOR! an amazing piece of work.
a lot of VERY talented young people there. I was EASILY the oldest dude there last year. I'd say I was 4th this time. Few more old dudes coming out to play with the silly import cars.
Me in the staging lanes.
In the tech line. I got failed first time through for belt expiration (1 month off), had to pull them out of the other car (1 month to the good). Silly to be so hard core, but I do understand the idea behind it.
