Definition of a street car. 93 octane pump gas, full exhaust with mufflers, interior with carpet, door panels etc. No slicks. No lexan. Licensed and insured. All drivetrain match's the manufacturer of the body. Be fun to write up rules that would get some pride out there for the unsung heroes with street cars. Who fits this "concept"? Anybody that makes passes in Malta have anything that qualifies for that title? Be a fun title to put up for grabs. AND, it could be further expanded on so a person could have some titles to hand out. The times are getting faster and faster, unless we as a group encourage the slower cars to show, eventually we'll have only SERIOUSLY hardcore dudes, and nobody else. We could expand on the street car idea. to have an overall winner. and then custom license plates or decals made for: Fastest Mopar Fastest Chevy Fastest Ford Fast Buick (there's bound to be one somewhere) Fastest pickup Fastest whatever Fastest overall title, could even have a top 10 (and guys could try and break into the top 10 from season to season, or improve their position). How cool for a local dude to be driving around in his pickup (that he ran something a 9.40 with) that says "PCMS fastest street pickup 2009". Not everybody can swing a dedicated race car. Not everybody has the funds, knowledge or time to get to the next level. I dunno. If it's done right, not a lot of out of pocket funds for the track, and a LOT of the slower but still competitive street cars coming back to play. AND, some SERIOUS bragging rights. That goes a long way in the cold months when people are trying to figure out where to spend their hobby money. Just an idea I had.

I completely agree. I will not have a "race car" anytime soon but I have been tweaking my daily driver when I get a chance and I will be bringing it down to make some passes as soon as I get the gaping hole in my firewall patched and some decent tires(read sometime next year). But I think with a little encouragement you could get a lot of us guys without the budgets to participate.

I don't think it's guys without budgets. I think it's more of the intimidation factor. There were a LOT of folks taking their street cars to the track when it first started. I can think of 4 or 5.
It's just that they are kind of outclassed, so to speak. With the feeling of bringing a knife to a gunfight. What if there was a Knife only weekend for street cars. With some bragging rights attached? Also, once you've run a 10.90 car about 4-5 passes... that's what you get. there's just no drama or adrenaliine to bring that person back. "hmm, it goes 10.90@65mph... I was going faster than that on the way over to Malta..." BUT, there is drama in a great side by side race with actual bragging rights.
I know when I took my wife's bug over to run it... was pretty dull. no burnout, nobody my speed to get a good race out of. Just us getting a slip. Car hasn't changed, slip will be the same, no reason to bring it out. I'm just saying it would be cool to find a reason to bring out those kinds of cars.
A side by side pass with 10.50 cars is a LOT more fun to be involved in than a 10.50 car racing a 7.50 car with a 3 second head start. And there are probably 100 times more 10.50-10.90 cars in our area than 7.50 cars. How to get them out, that's the question.
Be fun to try and write up some basic rules.

I just don't see a way of making it work. If you limit it by ET then you will have sandbaggers, and will have to be the police. If you limit it by street legal you will have someone with a 500 horse big block thats "street legal" but would eliminate the point in having the race. I don't know how you would set it up to make it work.

Why not start Friday night street legals like most tracks have, could have some prizes for best light etc, setup some grudge races, etc. Muffler equipped liscensed street cars only, maybe even run a quick king of the hill time permitting?

I'd love to bring a bunch of high school kids to Malta to do this. They are always bragging on their cars with no way to prove it. Or they want to take my truck on and I won't street race anybody. (anymore)

I don't know how you would set it up to make it work. I dunno. If a person had some badass car and finally got around to bringing it to the track because of the street legal thing, that would be a positive thing. Always gonna be somebody fastest and somebody slowest. Even if you weren't the fastest overall, you could still easily be the fastest Mustang in NE Montana, or whatever it was. Just fun little titles to put a smile on your face. But the ultimate goal would be to bring more people to the track. The friday night Street Legals, the concept sounds cool. Or maybe a street legal "weekend". Bring those kids on up from Culbertson. I bet they'd have a blast!

How about they have to show insurance card as well that would eliminate alot of the ones that are street legal but are never driven on the street.

A street legal drag race day would be way cool. It would probably bring out some new racers, that aren't so intimidated by the full out race cars. I was at Malta for the big money race, in my street legal Transam, and was so nervous going against a 6.41 car that I red lit in the first elimanation round. My car is quick, but racing a car that pulls its front wheels 4 feet off the ground is very intimadating.

Dude, we just got to the hotel from being at the dyno shop all day. You're gonna like riding in the this street car. We get to race in S/C, Street Comp. Car is 15 pounds light, has to weigh 2500 minimum, we'll just add gas.

Rick,
I think those guys are making to much work out of it. Most of us don't have that kind of thing. Need to find a way that brings out cars that normally might be to timid to show. Or have come out before, but got creamed and weren't fast enough because they are not a true race car. Just your street car.
I'm thinking we don't want to debate the technical accuracy of the bolts on a dudes engine or re-visit comparing perfect factory editions of camaros against road runners.
Just what a dude has, with some basic rules.
Licensed, and insured. Full exhaust with mufflers, all the way out the back. Full interior no lexan No slicks, drag radials okay. No race fuels of any kind or octane boosters. 93 octane outta the pump from places like Jodys Conoco, or Ezzies, etc. working headlights, tailights, wipers.
All drivetrain matches the manufacturer of the body. (As an example, no 9" rear end under a Chevy, that kind of thing, etc.)
Ideas?

Bob The FAST site was a starting point, but what you have started sounds like a good idea. No power adders unless factory A few years back they had something like this at Lewistown, what they had was some race cars with mufflers and Nos with street slicks. It seems like they had to have DOT approved tires. Rick
