This is a simple rule format that we have used for years at street car shootouts and 100ft dash events in Alberta. Makes for some even matchups, and real easy to tech. True Street - 1 or less performance adders Real Street - 2 performance adders Quick Street - 3 performance adders Super Street - 4 performannce adders Pro Street - 5 or more performance adders Limited Street (11.50 index class) - any car can enter, regardless of performance adders. Heads up race, winner advances, if you run faster than 11.50 seconds, your out. If both cars run faster than 11.50 seconds, they are both out. Performance adders are defined as: V6 engine +1 V8 or larger engine +2 Supercharger +1 Turbocharger +1 Nitrous +1 All Wheel Drive +1 Alcohol as main fuel +1 4 link or ladder bar rear suspension - non oem +1 Sticky tires (anything with no treadwear rating or rating less than 150) Slicks, Street Slicks, Drag Radials, etc. up to 10.5" tread width +1 (any car running less than 10.5" tread will be +1 regardless of wheel wells) over 10.5" tread width, with non-stock size wheel wells +2 (cars/trucks over 10.5" tread with stock wheel well will be +1) Basically add up how many power adders your car falls under and that is your class ranking, ex; a turbo fox mustang with drag radials and stock style suspension is in Super Street, a stock SRT4 neon would be true street, etc. There are two events up here that specifically use these rules and draw car counts of 100-175 street cars.

I spent a little time with Neil and Cotton, and we came up with some clever ideas that negate a LOT of tech. Simple is better.
The ultimate goal is to get cars to the track, nothing else. Car count, and the cars we don't see at the track that we all know are out there. The hesitant guys. Let's support those dudes with a fun weekend for them.
I like Neils idea of getting car clubs involved and having a club shootout with nothing but cars running 8.50 and slower, mufflers, interior, licensed, no slicks. That's it on the rules.
And because it's a car club and region based idea, you got buddys motivating their buddys to get on the track and have some fun with them, not against them.
An example, you might have points for the Malta car club, against the Plentywood car club or the Glasgow Madd Draggers group. And it's good natured fun for small trophys and braging rights. Gives the slower cars (so to speak) a legitimate shot at glory "for the team". And it's not about who has the fastest cars at 8.50, it's who's got the best group of drag racers because it's all ET based. Guys with nice 60's and 70's muscle cars that run in the mid 14's can show up, heads held high, and have a good time without fear of having to race a car that's potentially 2 times quicker.
I like the heck out of it.

We used to do something similar at the track I used to work at. The local car club would hold a show&shine Saturday and then a poker run sunday morning that ended up at the racetrack. They never ran a bracket program, just friendly grudge races and a chance for them to wring out the old hotrod. They had a few trophys for best light, best burnout, etc, but all in all just a fun day, in fact it was called the "funrun". It was great for attracting a whole other group of spectators and racers to the fun of drag racing. See ya staurday Rick!

I think the fastest street car idea is great. I think the crowd would love it as long as it is heads up racing. Most spectators dont really understand bracket racing but they love a heads up race.Lets work on it over the winter and get a race set up! I'll be there saturday to watch the fun!

I agree, a straight up race, that's easier to understand, and looks better to the crowd. We'd just have to find similar speed cars, or set it up for normal qualifying and then pair up the cars based on ET and sorted them in exact order slowest to fastest. Maybe still do bracket racing, but the cars would nearly leave together so it would look okay. Lot of speculation. Maybe what a person needs to do is ask some of the dudes that should be at the track, car guys, why they aren't. What's keeping them from coming? What would it take to get them to come out for a fun weekend? dunno

Many of the potential racers I try to get to the track don't understand bracket racing so they won't show up with a slow car. This would most likely have to be a weekend dedicated to only street cars since the street tires would wreck the groove for the fast cars. The most important item to have is real street tires, no cheater slicks. Saskatoon has one of these and still have many cars in the 11's.

The most important item to have is real street tires, no cheater slicks. Saskatoon has one of these and still have many cars in the 11's. At Woodburn, they had a lane for "Fun runs". No time only, no bracket racing, etc. Easy to understand, and well populated with dudes wanting to have fun. And if you think about it, a lot of the people that show up once are just looking to have fun, so "fun run" makes sense to them. If you're going to travel, you want to have fun. Sometimes all the explanation that's needed is a good name. I was imaging a scenario where you might be talking to a newer racer or car enthusiast that hasn't been to the track. To say something like come on over to the strip and make some "fun runs" makes sense, right off the bat. and sounds, well, FUN. I think for some people drag racing is probably like Football is to me. I go and watch the games and support it... but I don't have a good grasp on the rules and would like a fool if I tried to actually play it. I haven't really followed Football since Michael Jordan stopped playing for the Bears.

We have a fun weekend at Cut Bank every year. Burnout contest on Friday night, followed by a lawn chair movie. Then on Sat., there is a breakfast, car show, free airplane and helicopter rides, airplane bowling ball bombing(they try to hit a car with a 16 lb ball), then we have have 1/8 mile drag races. You just go ask someone to race. We average 125 cars for the show and 60 for the races. Street cars, pickups, motorcycles, and full out race cars. Everyone has a lot of fun. The same guy that was running the timing lights on Sept. 19, 20 in Malta, also brings them to Cut Bank. That way you have time slip, so you can find someone that is running a compariable time to race. This all takes place at the airport in Aug. On another note, what class would my street car fit into? I have the factory bottom end on my LS1, factory tranny, but I have a Moser 12 bolt, Dart heads, big cam, headers, and more, full exhaust, full interior, drag radials. I've run a best of 8.05, with a spare tire and jack. The car even has 113k on the odometer, I even drive it about 5000 miles a year.

On pump gas, I'd say you're in the hunt for a fast street car.

A couple of more ideas............. Make it a two day event Show N Shine on Sat. follwed by a cruise. Make the cruise at least 25 + miles long with at least 10 miles of highway speed 60mph + . The cruise would be manditory for entry into the fastest street car class. This would help weed out the less than true street cars. Malta's annual car show weekend would be a great time to do this as I think it would also increase the participants for the car show.
Just my 2 cents

Weeds out the "overheaters" that would be pushing their luck and trying to sneak in under the radar. EXCELLENT idea to include a cruise in it. Has the plus of improving car show attendance. not only should the cruise be mandatory, but simply being there for the car show as well. Gotta show it, Cruise it, and then take it to the track. A street car that can't survive on the street, well, that ain't much of a street car. Good idea.

So far this is sounding like a blast. There is one problem... Somebody has to organize and run this thing. Also if it will tied in with the car show you should get in contact with John C. or Jim S. at the First State Bank so that it can coordinate with them and be advertised. So who wants to step up? ? Thanks Rick
